Cloud Infrastructure Software VMware Applies for OpenStack Gold Membership

VMware has applied to be a Gold member of the OpenStack Foundation

VMware has applied to become a Gold member of the OpenStack Foundation, according to a report by GigaOM. Existing OpenStack Gold members include Dell, MorphLabs, Cloudscaling, NetApp and Cisco Systems.

NEC and Intel are also expected to submit applications, which will be reviewed at the OpenStack Foundation board meeting on Tuesday.

GigaOM calls the announcement “surprising” since when OpenStack was launched two years ago, it was “seen as a competitive response to VMware’s server virtualization dominance inside company data centers.” However, recent moves including the acqusition of Nicira (an OpenStack player) in July represent its willingness to work with non-VMware centric infrastructure, GigaOM says.

“It is unclear if in the future the OpenStack philosophy will dominate over VMware philosophy, or, perhaps, the two will converge somewhere in the middle,” Boris Renski, CMO and co-founder of Mirantis said in a blog post comparing OpenStack and VMware. “The only thing that’s obvious is that OpenStack has momentum and it’s different from traditional thinking ways of thinking about virtualization. It is about a holistic approach to infrastructure automation; it is about open source; it is about business models that aren’t based on end user license agreements.”

Momentum around OpenStack can be seen in recent announcements including Rackspace shifting its cloud hosting platform on to Openstack, and Red Hat previewing its commercial version of OpenStack earlier this month.

A recent survey by performance monitoring provider ScienceLogic finds that 39 percent of web hosts consider cloud providers like Rackspace as their biggest threat, while 46 percent of respondents have no plans to use any integrated stack including OpenStack.
