Microsoft Shuffles Senior Team of Server and Tools Division to Improve Engineering Structure

Satya Nadella remains president of the server and tools unit at Microsoft, several senior leaders reporting to him have different titles

Microsoft is making some changes to the executive team of its Server and Tools division, according to a report by ZDNet on Friday.

While Satya Nadella remains president of the unit, several senior leaders reporting to him have different titles. For example, according to ZDNet, Scott Guthrie, former corporate vice president Azure App Platform is now CVP of Program Management.

Microsoft appointed Nadella to president of server and tools in February 2011 in order to help improve Microsoft’s position in the cloud market.

Aside from Guthrie, Microsoft senior leaders and their respective new roles are as follows: Jason Zander, CVP Development; Bharat Shah, CVP of Test and Engineering Systems; Brad Anderson, CVP of Program Management; Bill Laing, CVP of Development and Craig Fleishman, partner director of test and engineering systems.

“There were some changes in the Server and Tools engineering organization. It is not at all uncommon for there to be occasional shifts throughout the product cycle. The purpose of the reorg is to create a consistent engineering structure for improved alignment and faster decision making,” Amy Bardzukas, general manager of communications at Microsoft told ZDNet. “The completion of a significant Windows server product development cycle provides us with an opportunity to improve our alignment. We continue to focus on the service we run and the infrastructure we provide to help cloud optimize our customers’ businesses.”

A quick search on the Microsoft Careers website results in dozens of recent job postings in the Server and Tools division for mostly engineering jobs, including a senior program manager for Windows Server posted on Monday.

The changes to Microsoft’s Server and Tools division come as it has updated its SkyDrive cloud storage service. As Mary Jo Foley of ZDNet points out, Microsoft has started to focus development on its consumer products, seen in its recent launch of Outlook.com webmail, since its business products are doing so well.

Revenue for the Server and Tools unit in the fiscal year Microsoft just finished reached $18.7 billion in revenue, compared to $18.4 billion for Windows, Business Insider says.

Microsoft web hosting partners contribute to the growth of its servers and tools division. At its partner conference in July, Microsoft said 14,000 hosting partners report on Windows Server, 8,500 of partners on SQL Server, 5,000 on Microsoft Exchange Server and 1,600 partners on Microsoft SharePoint.
