UK web hosting provider iomart Group announced on Thursday it has purchased the Manchester hosting company Melbourne Server Hosting, joining iomart’s other web hosting and domain registrar brands including Iomart Hosting, RapidSwitch, Easyspace, Westcoastcloud, and Titan Internet.
Though the financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed in the press release, a report by The Scotsman says iomart will pay an initial amount of $10.2 million with two deferred amounts of $392,550 – “one contingent on the successful integration of the operations of Melbourne into the group, and the other contingent on the amount of net debt and working capital of Melbourne at completion.”
The acquisition comes a few weeks after iomart secured a $31 million revolving credit facility with Lloyds Bank Wholesale Banking and Markets.
Though iomart did not state a reason why it acquired Melbourne in the press release, it appears to be driven mainly by a geographical and customer expansion into North of England.
The acquisition includes Melbourne’s two data centers and offices on the Manchester Technopark, plus its nearby disaster recovery facility.
“This is an important acquisition for us as it gives us our first physical data centre presence in the North West of England,” said Angus MacSween, CEO of iomart Group. “It increases iomart Group’s network of fully owned and managed UK data centres to seven and puts us firmly at the heart of the growing online and media business hub that Manchester has become.”
Melbourne Server Hosting specializes in physical server hosting and has a cloud hosting brand called Serverlove.
Supported by its 30 employees, Melbourne Server Hosting provides a range hosting services to its 600 customers includibg PZ Cussons, JJB Sports, and The Daily Mash.
In a blog entry, Melbourne Server Hosting CEO Daniel Keighron-Foster wrote that Melbourne would “continue as an ‘independent’ entity” and that its “data centers are staying intact and [its] staff will continue to work from [the] Manchester office.”
The acquisition will ultimately benefit customers of Melbourne Server Hosting, providing them with an extensive range of bespoke web hosting services, 24-hour technical support and high service level agreements offered by iomart Group.
iomart had been looking to expand into the Manchester area for a while and Melbourne’s “great reputation in the region” and the fact that it “owns and manages its own data centres offered the perfect path for us to enter what is a very competitive regional market for top quality hosting,” said MacSween.
In addition to the Melbourne purchase, iomart also annound it acquired Surrey-based hosting company Skymarket Limited in July.
iomart Group provides cloud computing and managed hosting services in the UK, where it fully owns and manages data centers in London, Maidenhead, Glasgow, Leicester and Nottingham.
