Cloud services provider NTT Communications released a study on Tuesday that finds 40 percent of enterprise IT decision makers are familiar with virtualized network services, but regardless of familiarity, 91 percent want to know more about network virtualization.
Network virtualization is only one component of the study, commissioned by NTT Communications and conducted by IDG Research Services. Collected online in March, the results of the study are based on responses from 300 enterprise IT decision makers, and covers enterprise attitudes about cloud adoption, as well as common network performance issues.
The analysis of virtual network services is especially relevant in light of the several notable acqusitiions in the space recently. For example, VMware acquired network virtualization platform provider Nicira at the end of July to help position it as a leader in virtual networking for cloud services.
NTT says its findings indicate IT decision makers are still thinking about virtualization primarily as technology for servers, not networks. The study also finds that simplified network management is largely unrecognized as a cloud benefit, which NTT says suggests relatively low maturity of the technology.
NTT offers OpenFlow-based virtualized network services, which explains the motivation behind commissioning the study, and NTT says enterprises that use open protocols like OpenFlow for virtualized networks can expand network bandwidth on demand.
“Cloud services that include a virtualized network don’t require physical location-based network configuration changes as they expand capacity, freeing enterprises from costly IT procurement for that purpose,” NTT said in a statement.
The study also has a few predictable findings, such as security being one reason enterprises still rely on company-owned servers rather than third-party servers.
According to the research, US respondents are significantly more likely than those in other regions like Europe or Asia to have already implemented cloud in one or more locations. Almost 40 percent of US respondents have deployed clouds in one or more region.
At the beginning of June, NTT acquired UK data center operator Gyron to strengthen its cloud offering in Europe.
