Open Data Center Alliance Publishes PaaS, SaaS Cloud Usage Models

The Open Data Center Alliance announced last week it has published two new interoperability-focused usage models focused at PaaS and SaaS, along with a foundational document on interoperability requirements for the cloud.

Addressing customer demands for interoperable solutions, the documents detail expectations for market delivery to ODCA’s open, industry standard cloud solution adoption.

There is certainly an ongoing trend in vendors and vendor driven trade groups providing material to help the industry as a whole to accelerate widespread adoption of the cloud.

The requirements are designed to ultimate help influence Alliance members’ planning and purchasing, and highlight requests for providers to deliver solutions based on the requirements.

The Alliance has published 14 Open Data Center Usage Models, including five usage models focused on security and infrastructure requirements, and an overview document on identity management in the cloud, which it published in April.

Discussions have already begun with providers to help accelerate delivery of solutions based on these new cloud ussage requirements, according to the press release.

These member-defined requirements document the greatest challenges and in-demand solutions for cloud deployment in the categories of Secure Federation, Automation, Common Management & Policy, and Transparency.

The requirements was joined by a Best Practices document from National Australia Bank outlining carbon footprint reductions in cloud computing.

NAB’s paper illustrates their leadership in innovative methods to report carbon emissions in the cloud and aligns their best practices to underlying Alliance requirements. All of these documents are available in the ODCA Documents Library.

Because cloud applications and services must co-exist and interact across service providers and enterprise deployments, it is increasingly important to define and implement requirements for interoperability.

The new usage models, focusing on Platform as a service andSoftware as a service interoperability, ensure that applications and services operate seamlessly across clouds and providers.

The PaaS interoperability usage model outlines requirements for rapid application deployment, application scalability, application migration and business continuity, while the SaaS interoperability usage model makes applications available on demand, and encourages consistent mechanisms, enabling cloud subscribers to efficiently consume SaaS via standard interactions.

To accompany these usage models, the Alliance published the ODCA Guide to Interoperability, which describes proposed requirements for interoperability, portability and interconnectivity.

The documents are designed to ensure that companies are able to move workloads across clouds.

These Alliance it the midst of preparing for its first Solutions Summit, an event focused on accelerating POCs and deployments of cloud through facilitated networking between enterprises and solution providers.

Talk Back: Do you agree that these new usage models will help increase cloud adoption and boost cloud services revenues? How are you working to increase cloud adoption among your own customer base? Let us know in the comments.
